  1. I forgot to only speak about School T.V. News and so I've INCLUDED my thoughts about our school video distribution system.
Our school has the Richardson Load Scheduler Program and Portable T.V. Studio. We were the first school to receive this program in our system in the spring of 2007. When I began working at my school it was not being implemented, I have had every intention of getting both up and going for our school, but have been overwhelmed with implementing other initiatives. My goal is to begin a school T.V. show and train teachers to use the load scheduler next year when I’ve completed my UWG classes. The implementation of these technologies takes training, preparation, support, and time. From the beginning, many of the schools that received this technology first, have had trouble with the equipment consistently working. This may be the reason the media specialist before me did not use it. My previous mentor used the load scheduler for videos in her school. Teachers make requests for videos/DVDs the day or week before and the media specialist searches and schedules teacher requests. The teacher controls the video from her desktop in the classroom. The media specialist has to check for requests every afternoon and morning and set up the program. This is great for teachers in that they have more control over rewinding, pausing, and playing the video as they teach. It certainly requires teachers to plan and let the media specialist know of her needs ahead of time. There are also 100 free instant digital NASA videos available by using the Richardson Telecenter. As of now teachers make written requests for videos and I load them using our closed circuit video program using channels 89-92.
The T.V. studio will be another form of technology I look forward to implementing in our school. I know it will take other teachers support enthusiastic, and focused students to make a daily news show for our school. East Central Elementary has a daily morning show that is live from the media center. The media specialist and gifted teacher direct students in the endeavor. I know that as the years have gone by the show has gotten better and better. It’s a wonderful way to give students ownership and leadership of getting information out to the school community. The format they use is the pledge, weather, activities for the day or upcoming programs for students. Each week a class sends a small group of students to lead the pledge. This coordination can be problematic due to late buses, students, or substitutes. I remember when I taught kindergarten we had our students perform a Thanksgiving story with Indians, Pilgrims, and turkeys live over the school T.V. I also remember that the set became more sophisticated over time. Students look forward to participating and gain a wealth of knowledge from this experience. I hope to collaborate with our challenge teacher and her 5th grade students to bring the daily show to our school community. After looking at Pleasant Grove’s News Network I was amazed at the independence students have as they prepare for their programs. I can see the time and forethought of the media specialist and challenge teacher. I think teaching students routines and procedures (habits) of producing the show is evident and necessary. The school I work in now uses the loud speaker to share announcements, pledge, and the counselor’s daily message. I have had students perform advertisements for activities we have planned in the media center. I look forward to having a morning show in my school next year!

  2. Jodye:
Thanks for sharing such in-depth information regarding your schools video distribution system. Not being in a permanent school setting makes it difficult for me to get familiar with a particular system so your blog was very helpful.
I found that at Elm Street there is a great deal of use of their video distribution system because most teachers have really old VHS tapes and few VCRs. They have to depend on the VDS to show movies or buy new DVDs. (Which we know ain't gonna happen).
I well remember the East Central morning show and my having to send kids down to run the program. I thought that it was well run and very inclusive. The team of Ms. Christian and Pam Russell was a vital part of its success. I don't think a TV News Production can or should be done by one person. Hopefully, you can rely upon the collaboration of a colleague in the implementation of your TV news program.
